Custom Vending has introduced cryptocurrency payment capabilities for its OMNI Series vending machines through a partnership with RiverArk, according to a press release. The integration allows customers to pay with Bitcoin over the Lightning Network while enabling operators to receive funds in U.S. dollars or another selected digital asset.
Customers select a product and scan a QR code displayed on the machine's touchscreen using a compatible cryptocurrency wallet. After the payment is approved and settled, the machine dispenses the product. The system works with wallets and payment apps including Coinbase, Strike, Cash App and Venmo.
Custom Vending said the RiverArk platform can automatically convert cryptocurrency payments into U.S. dollars, limiting operators' exposure to changes in digital-asset prices. The company also said blockchain transactions can reduce processing fees and eliminate chargebacks because completed payments cannot be reversed.
Existing OMNI customers can add the capability by creating a merchant account, generating a QR code and updating their machines' software. The OMNI Series also supports cash and card payments and offers customized touchscreens, remote inventory and sales monitoring, machine alerts and an elevator delivery system for fragile products. Custom Vending said potential locations include college campuses, gyms, nightlife venues, cannabis dispensaries and other technology-oriented businesses.
"Bitcoin payments have been talked about for years, but adoption only matters when the technology becomes practical for everyday business," Jeff Cramer, president of CustomVending.com, said in the release. "With the OMNI® platform, we're taking something that has traditionally felt complex and turning it into a simple point-of-sale experience. The customer can pay with Bitcoin, the operator can receive U.S. dollars, and the machine handles the transaction in seconds. That is the kind of innovation we want to bring to automated retail."
