A small vending startup in Grand Junction, Colorado, is testing a modern, cashless approach with two machines installed at the local police station, according to a Grand Junction Daily Sentinel report. Launched in November, Freedom Vending uses technology that allows customers to pay by card, open the machine and take items directly from shelves, with built-in sensors and cameras tracking purchases and inventory automatically.
Owner Jeremy Skeen said the machines are smaller and more flexible than traditional vending units, making them easier to place in a wider range of locations. Customers can also suggest new products via QR codes, while the system manages stock in real time. The business model eliminates the need for cash and traditional dispensing mechanisms, reflecting a shift toward more automated retail experiences.
Beyond convenience, the company emphasizes social impact. A portion of sales supports anti-human trafficking efforts, and Skeen aims to create flexible job opportunities for people with disabilities. As the business looks to expand across the region, he said, adding more machines could both grow revenue and increase employment opportunities for individuals who may face barriers in traditional workplaces.
