Vending machines replace former newsstand spots in NYC subway stations

Cashless vending machines are beginning to appear in New York City subway stations, giving riders access to snacks and beverages as traditional newsstands continue to disappear, according to an ABC7 NY News report.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority has installed machines at three locations, including the Second Avenue station on the F line in Manhattan's Lower East Side.

Food items cost about $3, while drinks are priced as high as $4.50 for a protein beverage. MTA Chairman and CEO Janno Lieber described the machines as a low-cost way to restore some of the convenience once provided by newsstands, which previously operated in nearly 300 stations but now number only a few dozen.

The MTA plans to add vending machines at 20 to 30 more locations. CC Vending is working with the transit agency and Coca-Cola on the deployment. CC Vending President Michael Cascione Sr. told the news outlet the project follows years of planning and represents a new approach to retail in the city's subway system.
