Naval Support Activity Souda Bay in Greece has opened a fully automated Navy Exchange micro market designed to provide military personnel with round-the-clock access to food and essential supplies, according to a press release.

The U.S. Navy and Navy Exchange Service Command celebrated the opening Oct. 6, addressing a longstanding shortage of dining options for service members working overnight at the installation on the island of Crete.

The unattended market uses electronic self-checkout kiosks and offers refrigerated foods, microwavable meals, protein-rich snacks, beverages and toiletries. Capt. Patrick O'Neill, commanding officer of Naval Support Activity Souda Bay, said in the release that personnel working night shifts and standing watch previously had few substantial food options after 7 p.m. The facility is intended to improve access to meals without requiring traditional foodservice staffing around the clock.

Jennifer Sullivans, general manager of the Souda Bay Navy Exchange, said in the release the project was developed in response to feedback from the military community and in cooperation with installation leadership.

The opening ceremony also featured Indianapolis Colts cheerleaders visiting as part of an Armed Forces Entertainment tour. The new market supports the Navy's efforts to improve quality-of-life services for military personnel stationed at the installation, which supports U.S. and allied operations across several regions.

Self-service is no longer just about convenience. It’s becoming a powerful way to increase sales, reduce costs and reach customers in new places — and you can see what’s next at the Automated Retail & Kiosk Innovation Show, Dec. 14-16 in Miami Beach.
