Tomra Systems ASA has signed a letter of intent to become the preferred supplier of approximately 2,000 reverse vending machine installations for a major international retail chain operating in the U.K., according to a press release.
The agreement covers potential equipment sales, leasing and service arrangements across the retailer's network. Tomra did not identify the retailer or disclose the financial terms of the proposed agreement.
Deliveries are expected to begin in 2027, with installations primarily consisting of standalone reverse vending machines, including Tomra's B5 and S1 models. The equipment would allow consumers to return used beverage containers for collection and recycling. The announcement represents a potential expansion of Tomra's presence in the British market, although the letter of intent does not constitute a finalized purchase agreement.
The planned deployment comes as the U.K. prepares to introduce a deposit return scheme Oct. 1, 2027, covering England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales. The program is intended to increase collection and recycling rates for single-use beverage containers, reduce litter and improve the quality of materials recovered for recycling. Tomra said it is working with British customers to prepare for the program's launch.
In June, Norway-based Tomra introduced its Insight Analytics Suite as a digital management platform designed to help retailers and operators improve the performance of reverse vending machine networks.
