Smart data capture solutions provider Scandit has introduced Age Verified Self-Checkout, a vision AI-powered solution that automates age verification for self-checkout purchases of restricted products such as alcohol, tobacco and certain medications, according to a press release.

The software enables shoppers to verify their age using their smartphones without downloading an app or requiring additional kiosk hardware. The system can automatically complete about 80% of age checks, reducing the need for employee intervention and completing the verification process in less than 10 seconds for most customers, according to the company,

The system is designed to streamline one of the biggest bottlenecks in self-checkout by replacing routine manual age checks with an automated process. After scanning an age-restricted item, shoppers scan a QR code displayed on the self-checkout kiosk, take a selfie and receive an instant age estimate using on-device vision AI. If additional verification is needed, customers can scan a government-issued ID, which is compared to the selfie to help detect fraudulent use of another person's identification. The kiosk receives only a pass-or-fail result.

Scandit said the technology can improve compliance while reducing labor demands and checkout delays. The company estimated the solution can increase transaction throughput across a retailer's self-checkout fleet by about 5% while allowing store associates to focus on customer service and other higher-value tasks. The company also said the facial comparison technology is designed to identify attempts by underage shoppers to use someone else's ID.

The solution marks Scandit's first biometric offering and emphasizes privacy by performing all age estimation and ID verification directly on the customer's device. No biometric or identification data is transmitted or stored by either Scandit or the retailer, according to the company. The platform is designed for grocery stores, supermarkets, convenience stores and fuel retailers with high volumes of self-checkout transactions and complies with several international privacy and security standards, including GDPR, CCPA and ISO certifications.
