Officials in Dindigul district, India, have introduced a 24-hour automated milk vending machine in the tourist city of Kodaikanal, according to a Dairy News today report. Installed at a modern milk parlor, the machine dispenses chilled milk into containers supplied by customers, reducing reliance on disposable plastic pouches.
The machine serves residents, tourists, hotels and other hospitality businesses. Its enclosed stainless-steel tanks and automated temperature controls keep the milk below 4 degrees Celsius, or about 39 degrees Fahrenheit, while flow meters regulate the amount dispensed.
District officials said the system could prevent thousands of nonbiodegradable milk pouches from entering municipal waste and drainage systems. Direct dispensing may also reduce packaging and transportation costs for dairy cooperatives and processors, while continuous operation allows milk sales outside regular business hours without additional staffing.
