Art vending comes to southern Maryland

Artist Anita Evans has introduced a miniature art vending machine in southern Maryland, debuting it July 27 at Boone's Bagels in Leonardtown, according to a Baynet report.

Each turn dispenses a surprise selection that may include miniature artwork, stickers, temporary tattoos or other small collectibles created by Evans and other St. Mary's County artists.

The machine will rotate among local businesses and community events, with its contents customized to reflect individual locations. Evans also plans to rent it for weddings and other celebrations, offering artwork based on the people or themes involved. The concept combines the unpredictability of trading cards and blind-box toys with an affordable way for consumers to discover local art.

Similar machines have attracted significant interest elsewhere in the country. An Austin, Texas, project reportedly sold more than 45,000 miniature prints after launching in 2025, while a Minneapolis bookstore machine dispensed nearly 3,000 pieces from more than 80 artists within several months. Evans' machine is scheduled to appear next at The Social in Leonardtown on Sept. 5 and at a Piney Point Lighthouse event Sept. 12.
