East Japan Railway Co. has acquired the airport vending operations of Petrie Gough Ltd., according to a press release, adding approximately 800 machines located at major travel hubs including London Heathrow, Gatwick, and Luton airports. The deal increases the number of vending machines operated by JR East's UK businesses to about 1,800 units, extending the company's presence beyond railway stations and into airports.

JR East entered the UK vending market in 2019 and accelerated its expansion in 2024 through the acquisition of Decorum Vending Ltd., which operates roughly 1,000 vending machines across the UK's rail network. The latest acquisition was completed through the company's UK subsidiary, JRE Business Development UK Ltd.

Officials said the company plans to use technologies such as cashless payments, AI, telemetry and remote data analysis to enhance vending operations and improve the customer experience. Looking ahead, JR East intends to expand its smart retail business into other European markets while using passenger traffic and purchasing data to guide product selection, promotions and new services. The company also plans to introduce vending machines featuring Japanese regional products and specialty items as part of its broader international growth strategy.
