Lee Health has partnered with Vend-Rx to install a prescription dispensing vending machine at its Convenient Care clinic on Pine Island Road in Cape Coral, Florida, according to a WINK News report. The new machine is designed to provide patients with immediate access to commonly prescribed medications following a clinic visit.
Lee Health is a nonprofit public health system serving Southwest Florida, operating hospitals, physician practices, outpatient centers and urgent care facilities throughout Lee County.
The automated dispenser stocks approximately 60 to 70 frequently prescribed medications, including antibiotics, steroids and antihistamines. During an appointment, providers can determine whether a prescribed medication is available in the machine and electronically transmit the prescription to the system. Patients then verify their identity using their birth date, follow on-screen instructions, complete payment and receive the medication directly from the machine before leaving the clinic.
Lee Health officials said the technology is intended to complement rather than replace traditional pharmacies by addressing immediate care needs in a single visit. The system focuses on lower-cost medications and aims to eliminate an extra stop for patients who may be feeling ill. The vending machine has been operating for about a month, and Lee Health said it may expand the program to additional Convenient Care locations if patient response and utilization prove successful.
