Seven reproductive health advocacy organizations have launched a free healthcare vending machine inside the New Orleans Healing Center, offering birth control, emergency contraceptives, condoms, Narcan and fentanyl test strips, according to a Verite News report.

The "Your Body, Your Choice" vending machine was unveiled in April as part of an initiative aimed at expanding access to reproductive healthcare and harm-reduction supplies in Louisiana.

Organizers said the machine was created to help address healthcare access gaps across the state, particularly in rural areas and regions identified as maternity care deserts. A recent report from Tulane University's Newcomb Institute found that 17% more Louisiana parishes had become maternity care deserts since 2022, while 33% experienced declining access to care by 2025. Nearly half of the state's parishes lack an obstetric physician, according to the report.

The vending machine is available daily from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and is stocked through donations and personal contributions from participating organizations, including Birthmark Doula Collective, Women with a Vision and the Louisiana Coalition for Reproductive Freedom. Organizers said the machine sold out each week during its first three weeks of operation, highlighting strong community demand for free healthcare supplies.

Advocates said they hope to expand the vending machine program into rural Louisiana communities, though organizers acknowledged challenges including funding, restocking costs and finding host locations willing to support the initiative. Group leaders described the project as a temporary solution to broader healthcare access problems they say have worsened under increasingly restrictive reproductive healthcare policies.
