Nearly 195 million American adults drink coffee each week, making it the most popular beverage in the United States, according to the Spring 2026 National Coffee Data Trends report. Daily and weekly consumption levels have remained steady since 2022, with 66% of adults drinking coffee on a given day and 73% consuming it at least once a week.
The twice-annual NCDT, conducted by Dig Insights and commissioned by the National Coffee Association, is the longest-running study on U.S. coffee consumption, beverage preferences, and consumer behavior. Data for the Spring 2026 NCDT were collected Jan. 5-20, 2026, and respondents are a nationally representative sample of 1,850 Americans ages 18 and over.
Most coffee consumption continues to occur at home and in the morning. About 82% of past-day coffee drinkers prepared their coffee at home, compared with 28% who purchased it away from home. Morning consumption dominates, with 86% drinking coffee first thing in the morning, followed by smaller shares later in the morning, afternoon and evening. These habits have remained largely unchanged in recent years.
While traditional coffee consumption has held steady, specialty coffee continues to gain popularity. About 58% of adults reported drinking specialty coffee in the past week, up from 53% in 2022. Growth is being driven primarily by espresso-based beverages, including lattes and espresso, both of which posted notable increases. Industry leaders say coffee remains a central part of daily routines and a significant contributor to the U.S. economy.
