The National Coffee Association welcomed a decision by the U.S. Trade Representative to exempt coffee, including unflavored instant coffee, from tariffs resulting from the agency's Section 301 investigation into Brazil's trade policies, according to a press release. The exemption maintains existing tariff relief for coffee imports while expanding it to cover additional coffee products.
NCA President and CEO Bill Murray said the decision protects consumers from higher coffee prices and recognizes the industry's importance to the U.S. economy. He noted that because the U.S. cannot produce enough coffee to meet domestic demand, exempting coffee from the tariffs helps ease cost-of-living pressures while supporting jobs, manufacturing and businesses that rely on imported coffee.
