Japanese fragrance companies are expanding beyond traditional retail channels to attract new customers through personalized consultations and self-service technology, according to a Kyodo News report. Nose Shop Inc., which specializes in niche perfumes from around the world, opened a salon in Tokyo offering private fragrance consultations. During the hour-long sessions, customers evaluate a series of unlabeled scents selected based on advance research, with brand identities revealed only after the consultation.

Meanwhile, Tokyo-based Amulette Inc. is using vending machines to introduce consumers to lesser-known perfume brands. The company has installed Spanish-made fragrance vending machines at the Lucua Osaka shopping center, allowing shoppers to sample perfumes for a small fee. Amulette plans to deploy more than 30 of the machines across Japan this year as part of its effort to make fragrance discovery more accessible and less intimidating than visiting specialty stores.

The growing interest in fragrances is also attracting companies from outside the perfume industry. Beverage maker Ito En has launched a perfume line inspired by its jasmine tea products, including a fragrance called "Crazy Jasmine." Company officials said the venture reflects the connection between tea and aroma, with the scents designed to introduce consumers to both the fragrance collection and the company's tea products.
