Ontario, Canada, will allow liquor vending machines in establishments holding a liquor sales license, according to a government press release. The machines may dispense single servings of beer, cider, wine and ready-to-drink alcoholic beverages, but spirits will remain prohibited.

The Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario said the new service model is intended to give licensed businesses greater operating flexibility while preserving public-safety and responsible-service requirements. The change could allow venues to offer customers another self-service option for purchasing alcoholic beverages.

Licensed establishments will remain responsible for ensuring alcohol is sold and served safely and legally. The commission said operators must maintain oversight of the machines and provide appropriate staff control and supervision.
