The city council in Superior, Minnesota, has expanded restrictions on vending machine sales by adopting an ordinance that bans the sale of all age-restricted products through unattended machines, according to a Superior Telegram report. The measure builds on regulations approved last year that prohibited the sale of cigarettes, tobacco products and vaping devices through vending machines.

Under the new ordinance, the ban now extends to products containing cannabinoids, nicotine and other substances that can produce psychoactive, intoxicating or impairing effects. City officials said the change is intended to prevent youth access to products that are otherwise subject to age restrictions and regulatory oversight.

City Clerk Heidi Blunt said she receives regular inquiries from businesses interested in installing vending machines to sell such products, prompting the city to strengthen its rules. Officials noted that some of the products being marketed through vending machines are not licensed, creating additional concerns about oversight and enforcement. The ordinance is designed to close potential loopholes and ensure that age-restricted products remain unavailable through self-service vending channels.
