Checkout-free store opens at Washington college

365 Retail Markets and Evergreen Refreshments have opened a checkout-free store in the cafeteria at Lake Washington Institute of Technology in Kirkland, Washington, according to a press release. The store uses Amazon's Just Walk Out technology to give students, faculty and staff access to food and drinks at any hour, according to a news release from 365 Retail Markets.

Shoppers enter with a payment card, mobile wallet or the 365Pay app. The system tracks products they take from or return to shelves, creates a virtual cart and charges them when they leave. Unlike a vending machine or locked cabinet, the store is a walk-in retail space with a broader product selection.

Evergreen said the store is intended to provide another option during busy lunch periods and at times when campus food service previously consisted of vending machines or was unavailable. The companies did not provide a projected transaction volume or sales figure in the announcement.

As a member of Amazon's Just Walk Out Certified Partner Network, 365 Retail Markets handled the store's design, installation, camera calibration and entry gates. The store connects to Evergreen's existing 365 platform for product management, payments and reporting. 365 will provide initial support, with Amazon available for more specialized technology issues.
