The Wilson County Schools Board of Education unanimously approved on first reading a proposal that would limit energy drinks sold in high school vending machines to products containing 100 milligrams of caffeine or less, according to a report in the Chronicle of Mt. Juliet. The measure aims to reduce students' access to higher-caffeine beverages, some of which currently contain up to 200 milligrams per serving. A second reading of the proposal is expected in July.
Under the proposed policy, soft drinks would remain available in school vending machines, while energy drinks exceeding the caffeine limit would be removed. The restrictions would apply only to vending machine sales during the school day, as energy drinks could still be sold at extracurricular events such as athletic contests, concerts and theater performances.
