Amazon Pharmacy is expanding its diabetes treatment offerings by adding the pill version of Ozempic to its pharmacy platform and select kiosks, while also offering same-day delivery in thousands of U.S. locations, according to a CNBC report. Amazon said the move is part of its effort to improve access to newer treatments through faster delivery and more convenient pickup options.
The company has been expanding its lineup of GLP-1 medications, a class of drugs used to treat diabetes and obesity. Amazon began offering Novo Nordisk's weight-loss drug Wegovy earlier this year and later added Eli Lilly's weight-loss pill Foundayo. Unlike injectable GLP-1 medications, which require refrigeration, the pill versions can be stocked in kiosks, allowing Amazon to broaden its automated pickup strategy.
Amazon said about half of its U.S. customers currently have access to same-day medication delivery, with Ozempic pill delivery available in roughly 3,000 communities and expected to expand to 4,500 by the end of the year. Customers with a prescription can purchase the medication through Amazon Pharmacy for $149 per month when paying cash, while some insured customers may pay as little as $25, according to the company.
Amazon has also introduced pharmacy kiosks at select One Medical locations in California, where patients can pick up medications following appointments. The kiosks were initially designed to improve access to common prescriptions such as antibiotics, blood pressure medication and asthma inhalers while reducing shipping costs. Patients do not need a One Medical membership to use the kiosks, though the primary care service carries an annual subscription fee of $199. Amazon said it invested more than $4 billion last year to expand delivery infrastructure, particularly in smaller cities and rural communities.
