San Diego-based Tribe Coffee recently showcased its automated, solar-powered Jeep Coffee Wagon at The NAMA Show in Los Angeles, according to a press release, drawing more than 1,000 visitors and serving over 500 drinks during the three-day event. The demo was part of the show's Imagination Way exhibit, which highlights emerging technologies and next-generation service models in unattended retail and foodservice.
Co-founder Alex Grechman said the concept reflects a broader split in convenience services between fully automated and highly human-centered experiences. Tribe Coffee's model combines automation with a social, customer-facing role for operators. The automated system handles espresso preparation, allowing operators to focus on customer interaction.
The company is also developing an AI-powered platform designed to connect Wagon operators with local communities. Planned features include real-time location tracking, in-app communication, demand-based site selection tools and coordination of group activities such as fitness meetups.
Each Coffee Wagon is built into a road-legal Jeep equipped with a fully automated espresso system powered by battery and solar energy, eliminating the need for external utilities or generators. The compact, off-grid design allows deployment in locations where traditional coffee setups are not feasible, including beaches, trailheads, festivals and corporate campuses, while maintaining compliance with California health and business regulations.
