Hitachi Rail and Sumitomo Corp. have been awarded a contract to deploy a new automatic fare collection system for the North–South line of the Jakarta MRT, according to a Railway Pro report. The project will introduce automated fare gates and account-based ticketing technology, marking the first use of automated access gates on Indonesia's metro network. The system is designed to improve both passenger convenience and operational efficiency across the transit system.
The project will cover 20 stations. The scope includes the design, installation, testing and commissioning of a modern ticketing platform, along with software and system interfaces that will connect the new and existing stations into a unified fare collection network.
Passengers will be able to use contactless bank cards, QR codes and other digital payment methods to access the system. The new fare collection platform will also integrate with major payment gateways and Jakarta's JakLingko public transportation platform, allowing for a more seamless experience across multiple transit services. Hitachi Rail will serve as the system integrator, while Sumitomo will provide fare calculation, payment processing and station equipment, including ticket vending machines and automated access gates.
The initiative is being supported through cooperation between the governments of Japan and Indonesia, with funding from the Japan International Cooperation Agency. Officials said the project supports Jakarta MRT's broader goal of creating a smart, sustainable and fully digitized urban transportation network as the Indonesian capital continues to expand its mass transit infrastructure.
