Technology firm Andon Labs has launched Andon Market, an experimental retail store in San Francisco designed to test how artificial intelligence can operate a real-world business, according to a blog post on the company's website. The project is positioned as a controlled experiment in autonomous retail, with the goal of evaluating how AI systems perform when given end-to-end operational responsibility.
Andon and AI firm Anthropic recently conducted an AI-powered vending machine experiment inside The Wall Street Journal newsroom. The AI agent, tasked with running the machine, including ordering inventory, setting prices and generating a profit, was quickly manipulated by reporters into making poor decisions, including giving away products for free and purchasing unnecessary items like a PlayStation and even a live fish.
At the center of the latest initiative is an AI agent named Luna, which was given a budget, a corporate card and access to digital tools to run the store. Luna was tasked with core business functions including product selection, pricing, merchandising and overall strategy. The system was also responsible for identifying vendors and managing procurement decisions, effectively acting as the store's operator.
The AI's role extended beyond merchandising into staffing and operations. Luna posted job listings, reviewed applications and selected candidates, while human workers carried out physical tasks such as store setup and day-to-day execution.
Andon Labs said the project is intended to surface both the capabilities and limitations of autonomous systems in a live retail environment. By placing AI in charge of a functioning storefront, the company aims to generate insights into risk, reliability and real-world performance.
