SEASIDE HEIGHTS, NJ -- As the hurricane-enhanced storm dumped record rainfall on the Carolinas, New Jersey's shore remained relatively unharmed, suffering only minor damage.

"We had some power outages and flooding, but it wasn't as bad as it could have been. They were keeping up the sand dunes all weekend, and they're still piling sand so the ocean won't breach," reported Kimberle R. Samarelli, executive director of the New Jersey Amusement Association. "So far it's been successful. They've kept up with it all weekend. Every high tide there is a lot of vulnerability."

According to meteorologists, the worst of the storm hit on Oct. 2 and 3, with high tidal surges and high winds. Local reports have some communities suffering beach erosion and a few homes along the shoreline flooded.

"We're very fortunate, at least at the moment, that the hurricane is heading out to sea and not heading toward the coast, but this is another indication of why the preparedness measures and the resiliency measures that we've been taking and are continuing to take post-Sandy are so important," said Gov. Chris Christie, speaking at Sea Isle City, NJ, on Friday, Oct. 2.
