Stuart and Dexter Elementary Schools in Stuart, Iowa have installed book vending machines in their lunch rooms, according to a report by Raccoon Valley Radio.
West Central Valley School District's PTO is responsible for launching the book vending machines. Students are able to earn the books with good behavior. "Right now, it is teacher recommended students," Lisa Hemphill, West Central Valley PTO member, told the news outlet. "So each teacher picks one student a week who has shown positive behavior, being safe, respectful and responsible in the classroom, in the hallways and throughout the school. And then we give our recommendations to our building principal, and they give them their reward with their token to use during lunchtime on Fridays."
Hemphill also told the news outlet the PTO is exploring options to expand the book vending machine system to the middle and high schools in the district.
