The quadcopter drone travels horizontally in two dimensions above the playfield; the object of the game is to lower a parcel carried beneath the drone into a cup on the playfield without striking the sides.
The player controls the drone's travel on the X and Z axes by use of a joystick, then uses the firing-button to drop the parcel. This has four protruding legs, so skill and forethought are required to lower it cleanly into the cylindrical target. Success is rewarded with tickets.
The game, durably constructed of aluminum in the United States, is equipped with joystick/trigger controls on the front and one side, accommodating two players and allowing the game to be positioned in a corner.
The Skill Drone Crane incorporates the manufacturer's patented Alternating Play feature. In Alternating Play, the game repeatedly cycles between Player 1 and Player 2. According to Wedges Ledges of California, this speeds up play, prevents "hogging" and increases interest – and income.
The game is designed to be difficult and fair. A "Tri-Bob" system enables the location to adjust the difficulty; once adjusted, the skill level is the same for everyone.
