Two Narcan vending machines have been installed in Carbon Hill, Alabama, according to a WVUA 23 report. Each machines can hold up to 424 doses of Narcan, an opioid overdose reversal medication.
Jubilee House, a local social justice organization, distributes the Narcan as part of its Project HERO (Healing Emergency Response to Overdose) and manages three machines in Walker County.
"Between September and now we've distributed almost 5,000 doses of Narcan in less than a year," Jubilee House co-Director Ryan Cagle told the news outlet. "It started because Walker County is one of the highest places in the nation per capita for overdose, for opiate use, for overdose-related deaths. So it's a consistent problem in our community, it's a battle. We like to talk about how our community is on fire with it and that's something we all have to pitch in to take care of."
Cagle said Jubilee House is working on acquiring and installing two more vending machines in overdose hot spots throughout Walker County.
