SACRAMENTO, CA -- Remember when penny arcades were a clear symbol of urban blight and attracted a disreputable down-market clientele? Can there be any clearer indication those days are in the distant past than the warm welcome coin-op venues are receiving in revitalized sections of urban areas?
Most recently, the city of Sacramento welcomed the Coin-Op Game Room to its downtown Kay District. Located near the new Golden 1 Center, the rebranded Kay section is looking to draw in just the type of demographic attracted to the classic arcade games and so-called barcades.
The Coin-Op Game Room fits the bill. Located on the corner of 9th and K streets, the venue features more than 40 classic videogames, pinball machines and coin-op basketball. It also has a full menu featuring craft beers, specialty cocktails and "farm-to-fork" edibles.
