The University of Nebraska Medical Center has upgraded its scrub dispensary vending machines to ones stocked with scrubs tagged with RFIDs, according to a statement from UNMC.
The vending machines keeps track of who has scrubs checked out and how many, in addition to flagging users who may have returned scrubs with sharps or other items located in the pockets. Those flagged will be offered additional educational opportunities.
"The RFID technology of the new system will not only allow for easier dispensing and return of scrubs but also allow us to be able to trace sharps and other obecjts left in the scrubs to increase our understanding and put better safety measures in place," Scott Miller, director of procedural-surgical services, said in the statement.
Each cabinet in the vending machine contains an assigned inventory sorted by size and piece (shirt, pants and jacket). When checked out, the RFID of the items is captured and then associated with the individual checking the item(s) out.
