A high-tech scratchcard vending machine is being trialed at an Asda store in Ashton-under-Lyne, marking the first such implementation in Europe, according to a Mancunian Matters report. Developed by Scientific Games in partnership with National Lottery operator Allwyn, the SCiQ retail ecosystem features a 27-inch digital display showcasing up to 20 scratchcard games.
Customers select games on the screen, and Asda staff process the transaction via touchscreen, after which the dispenser automatically releases the chosen cards. The system also includes real-time sales analytics, automated inventory tracking, and a 10-scratchcard transaction limit for responsible gambling. Asda's senior director of productivity, Kevin Besford, said the trial aims to create a faster and more convenient shopping experience.
"This concept scratchcard dispenser takes player and retailer experience to a whole new level," Jenny Blogg, Allwyn's operations director, told the news outlet. The trial will run for several months, after which Allwyn will decide on a wider rollout.
