Researchers at the University of Cambridge in the U.K. claim a soda tax has assisted in preventing thousands of cases of obesity among girls 10 and 11 years old, according to a west.com report.

The soda tax that began in 2018 has helped to prevent close to 5,000 cases of obesity per year, according to the researchers.

The study found a larger drop in obesity among girls who lived in poorer areas.

There was no decline in obesity among boys.
