In-car vending machines, once promoted as a convenient add-on for rideshare passengers, are fading from use as companies shift their focus to advertising, according to a Mashable.com report.
Rideshare vending service Cargo, which partnered with Uber in 2018, allowed drivers to offer snacks, drinks and small items for purchase during trips. However, the company recently notified drivers that its in-car "store" program has been paused, signaling a retreat from the vending model.
Cargo said it is redirecting efforts toward car-top advertising displays, which allow drivers to earn additional income by showing ads while driving. The vending concept was intended to supplement driver income as earnings from rides alone have come under pressure.
Industry observers say the move underscores a transition from product sales to advertising-based revenue in the rideshare ecosystem. Rather than selling physical goods, companies are increasingly turning vehicles into mobile advertising platforms, similar to traditional taxi models that feature digital screens and rooftop ads.
