Tyson Foods Inc. plans to close two chicken plants in May, affecting nearly 1,700 employees, as part of an effort to strengthen its poultry business, according to a cnbc.com report.

The company's chicken income declined in the latest quarter.

The plants in Van Buren, Arkansas, with 969 workers and Glen Allen, Virginia, with 692 employees, will close May 12, with demand shifting to other facilities.
