SAN DIEGO, CA -- The FBI arrested a man accused of blowing up an ATM located in a San Diego gas station. According to local press reports, Scott Michael Petri faces charges related to use of an explosive device in connection with a robbery in the early morning hours of Aug. 13.

As detailed in court documents, Petri and an unknown accomplice used a cordless drill to bore two holes in the ATM housing, then poured gasoline into the opening before igniting it. The subsequent explosion provided access to the unit's safe and approximately $7,000.

Petri and his accomplice are also suspected of a similar ATM robbery on July 4 at a credit union.

As law enforcement and ATM experts have noted, the use of explosive devices to rob ATMs is a relatively new tactic in the U.S. Although widely used in some parts of Europe and the developing world, explosive devices are rarely used to commit domestic ATM robberies
