SuperValu and Centra have become the first retailers in Ireland to reach the 125 million eligible returns milestone through the Deposit Return Scheme, according to an LMFM report.
Meath stores alone contributed over 7 million containers to the scheme.
The achievement reflects a significant shift in recycling habits. With a nationwide network of reverse vending machines, SuperValu and Centra hope to make participate in the DRS more accessible.
"Our data indicates that since June over 95% of eligible cans and bottles we sell have been returned through our RVM machines nationwide," Luke Hanlon, managing director of SuperValu and Centra, told the news outlet. "This is a significant increase in the average nationwide recycle rate."
This milestone occurred on the heels of increasing scrutiny of the carbon footprint of reverse vending machines.
