A recent study found that tap water offers more overall environmental benefits than bottled water, according to a phy.org report.
The study, published in Science of the Total Environment, sought to provide objective data about three water consumption choices: tap water, bottled water and filtered tap water. The study was led by the Barcelona Institute for Global Health in collaboration with the Group of Environmental Engineering and Microbiology of the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya BarcelonaTech.
A life cycle assessment was conducted using software and a method called ReCiPe, allowing researchers to estimate damage to resource availability and ecosystems and impacts on human health from the bottled and tap water production.
Cathryn Tonne, study author, said health and environmental effects indicate tap water is a better option than bottled water since bottled water creates a wider range of impacts.
