A new medical study has found the presence of a particular gene variant can result in coffee being three times more likely to cause kidney dysfunction, according to a medicalnewstoday.com report.

The researchers from Toronto, Canada and Padova, Italy universities acknowledged some studies have found no association between caffeine intake and developing chronic kidney disease.

The new study indicated the likelihood of a coffee drinker getting chronic kidney disease depends on the speed at which they metabolize caffeine. Those who metabolized caffeine slower and drank at least three cups of coffee per day were more likely to develop kidney dysfunction.

About half of the participants in the study had a gene variant that caused them to metabolize caffeine more slowly and were determined to be at a higher risk of kidney damage.

The study, which spanned about 16 years, examined a population of 1,180 individuals 18 to 45 years of age. The subjects were assessed over a 7.5-year follow-up period.
