Three St. Louis Metro area towns plan to install free Narcan vending machines, according to a Fox 2 Now report.
Chestnut Health Systems aims to reduce the number of opioid-related deaths by installing these machines that will offer doses of Narcan (naloxone) for free to anyone who needs it. Narcan is an opioid overdose reversal medication that is relatively easy to use. If additional training or information is needed, users can scan a QR code on the machine to request it.
"Narcan is a non-prescription medication and when used appropriately can block or reverse the effects of an opioid overdose," Dan Hutchison, associate director of community health at Chestnut, told the news outlet. "The naloxone available in the vending machines is easy and safe to use. It might save the life of someone you know."
Chestnut Health System's Overdose Education and Naloxone Distribution team's ongoing efforts aim to prevent overdoses and overdose-related deaths in the area.
