An unusual vending machine has become a local attraction in Otis Orchards, a semi-rural community north of Liberty Lake, Washington, where a glowing, color-changing soda machine has stood beside a quiet roadside since spring 2025.

Known online as the Mystery 90s Vending Machine, the unit has drawn attention for its retro aesthetic and unexpected placement, earning a five-star rating on Google Maps.

The machine is even being listed as a cultural landmark, according to a report at Inlander.

It all started when Andrea Parrish and Peter Geyer purchased a used vending machine. through Facebook Marketplace. and installed it as a playful, community-oriented experiment.

Stocked with rotating, unusual sodas labeled with vague categories like Mystery Cola and No Caffeine Random; the machine offers everything for 75 cents per can. Parrish curates the selection to include uncommon but affordable flavors, and community members sometimes contribute their own suggestions.

Originally installed in a standard unit, the vending machine was later replaced with an outdoor-rated model, though it was damaged during a recent break-in.

Parrish has since secured a replacement Dr Pepper-branded machine and hopes to restore the signature multicolored lighting once it is tested and reinstalled. Despite the setback, she said most interactions have been positive, with hundreds of customers enjoying the novelty and sense of fun it provides.

Its creators see it as part of a broader effort to build community, alongside their nearby little free library and food pantry.
