Naiara Martínez Pérez, a lecturer in the nursing department at UPV/EHU-University of the Basque Country in Spain, recently conducted a study of the nutritional quality of products sold in the university's vending machines, according to eurekalert.org report. The study was conducted to determine the present situation, which Pérez said is necessary before taking any corrective action.
The top selling items were sweets at 23.4% of the total choices, followed by coffee, 20.3% and savory snacks, 11.7%.
The nutritional quality was low, as nearly half the products were classified as such, and nearly three quarters were classified as ultra processed.
The foods and beverages supporting healthy dietary recommendations were less promoted than those with a lower nutrition profile, Martinez said.
