South Carolina lottery officials are seeking approval to install ticket vending machines in retail locations statewide as part of an effort to attract younger players and adapt to changing consumer habits, according to a South Carolina Daily Gazette report.

The proposal comes as officials observe increasing preference for self-service options, particularly among younger customers, and follows earlier efforts to modernize purchasing methods.

After a budget-related attempt failed in the state House, lawmakers advanced separate legislation that would permanently authorize the machines. The lottery commission estimates it could recoup the cost of purchasing about 500 machines, priced at roughly $20,000 each, within the first year while generating between $1 million and $6.5 million in additional revenue. Annual gains could rise to as much as $9 million in subsequent years, with funds directed toward education.

The machines would include age verification features to ensure compliance with legal requirements. Officials say the move is necessary to reach consumers who prefer not to interact with clerks, noting that South Carolina is currently the only state lottery without such machines. The push follows a recent policy change allowing debit card purchases, which has already increased sales at participating retailers and contributed additional funding for education programs.
