DENVER -- Single-cup newcomer SolaBev has taken the wraps off a machine that uses large recyclable capsules to brew up to a 20-fl.oz. serving of coffee, tea or other hot beverages.
The SolaBev system is designed for use exclusively in business environments ranging from offices and restaurants to hotels. This prevents pilferage of capsules, since they are not compatible with any other brewers on the market.
The brewers come in two models: the Pro is designed for office and foodservice settings, and the Mini is ideal for in-room use in hospitality settings.
Each cup of coffee made in the SolaBev system is brewed to SCAA Gold Cup Quality standards. The recyclable plastic capsules hold up to 25g. of coffee or tea, and the showerhead diffuser screen is designed to ensure that the coffee grounds or tea leaves are completely extracted during brewing, maximizing their flavors.
SolaBev capsules offer a range of hot drinks and the company has plans to introduce cold beverages. The current line, under the SolaBev brand, includes single-origin Ethiopian, Costa Rican and Colombian coffee, along with coffee blends, flavored coffees and decaf options. Black and herbal teas round out the mix, as well as instant cocoa mixes and lattes.
All beverages can be privately labeled, too, which enables roasters and hoteliers to enhance their brands with single-serve options.
Three specialty roasters -- Thrive Farmers, Salt Spring Coffee and Coda Coffee -- are the initial launch partners for the SolaBev system.
"The inspiration for SolaBev was to create a product that allows specialty coffee roasters the ability to offer their coffee in a single-serve system," explained SolaBev founder Michael Szyliowicz. "Our key differentiator is the capsule itself. We understood the need for a more responsible solution that also met the increasing consumer demand for larger cups that could be personalized to each consumer's individual taste. And that's what we created."
