Sodexo UK & Ireland is on target to achieve a 50% reduction in food waste by the end of 2025, five years ahead of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal target of 2030, according to a Facilities Management Magazine report. This initiative, a core component of the company's 2040 net-zero roadmap, is being driven by the implementation of the WasteWatch program across 530 sites in the UK and Ireland.
Currently, Sodexo reports an average 45% reduction in food waste across sites using WasteWatch, compared to their respective baselines, and is confident in reaching its 50% target by Aug. 31, 2025.
"As a business serving a million meals every day, reducing food waste is one of the most effective ways we can cut carbon emissions and drive meaningful change. WasteWatch gives us the data and insights needed to understand where waste is happening and take targeted action to prevent it," Claire Atkins Morris, sustainability director at Sodexo U.K. and Ireland, told the magazine.
The company is also set to release its latest net-zero progress report in March 2025, which will detail reductions in supply chain greenhouse gas emissions.
