Sodexo Group, a Paris based global foodservice contractor, has teamed with Meal Makers, a food technology company, to introduce a digital marketplace where customers at Sodexo's restaurants can know what is in the food producers' warehouses and which is at risk of food waste, according to a press release.

Meal Makers is a hybrid between a digital wholesaler and marketplace where private and public kitchens get the opportunity to buy food that risks becoming food waste directly from the producer's warehouse.

Meal Maker's marketplace includes roughly 80 Swedish suppliers. To avoid unnecessary transport, ordered goods are shipped together with food to shops and businesses in the same area.

In the past, tons of food have been discarded from food producers' warehouses due to, for example, short best-before dates or defective packaging.

"We have already saved several tons of food," Magnus Holmegård, food purchasing manager for Sodexo Sweden and Denmark, said in the press release. "In order to reach both our own and the U.N.'s climate goals, the amount of food that is unnecessarily thrown away must be immediately minimized. Through the collaboration, we are involved in reducing wastage that also occurs outside of our own operations."
