BOULDER, CO  -- ShelfX is testing a new concept: a shipping container that unfolds into an unattended retail store.

The air-conditioned popup store concept is designed to be a 24/7 solution for outdoor events, sport events festivals and more. Another vision ShelfX has for the popup stores is for small towns to use them where there are not enough people to support a traditional brick-and-mortar c-store.

ShelfX's new concept contains six refrigerators, two freezers and a coffee machine. Additionally, electrical sliding doors open with a swipe of a credit card or usage of ShelfX's app. The container also includes safety features like surveillance cameras and outdoors lights to create a welcoming environment.

 "We are looking for companies interested in trying our new pop up store," said ShelfX chief executive Ran Margalit.

Established in 2011, ShelfX has deployed more than 1,000 of its unattended smart shelf fridges in 18 countries. ShelfX fridges can be found in hospitals, universities, work places, train stations and most recently, in airports and golf clubs.

Unlike with a traditional vending machine, ShelfX customers swipe a credit card or send Venmo payments which unlock the fridge. They can view the products, read nutritional facts, and put them back if they decide not to buy. Once the door is closed, customers are charged for what they took.
