Robusta coffee, historically less expensive than the milder arabica variety, hit its highest price levels in 12 years this week as roasters used more of a limited flow from the largest producers, according to a Reuters report.
Robusta demand rose steadily over the past two years in response to a supply crunch for arabica caused by Brazil frosts that pushed prices to an 11-year peak.
The current Brazil robusta harvest has been delayed by wet weather, but is still expected to be strong, although supplies from Vietnam, the largest supplier, have been weak.
