Race fans return nearly 6K containers through EcoVend machines

EcoVend by Reconomy collected nearly 6,000 single-use cans and bottles through reverse vending machines at the Formula 1 British Grand Prix at Silverstone, about 65 miles northwest of London. The machines were placed in the fan zone, according to a Sustainable Packaging News report, where spectators could try technology similar to what will be used under the U.K.'s deposit return program, scheduled to begin in October 2027.

The event, held July 3-5, marked the third year that EcoVend served as Silverstone's exclusive reverse vending machine provider. Money equivalent to the handling fees generated by the returned containers was donated to charities selected by Silverstone. The four-day race weekend drew 564,000 spectators, making it the most-attended Formula 1 event on record, according to the companies.

EcoVend said demonstrations at major events can help familiarize consumers with returning eligible containers and redeeming deposits before the national program begins. Its machines are also scheduled to appear at MotoGP and CarFest events at Silverstone later this summer.

The company is helping retailers and other prospective return-point operators select machines and prepare for container storage, collection and other operational requirements. The initiative also supports Silverstone's broader goal of recycling 65% of its waste by 2026.
