Allegheny County, Pennsylvania has taken a significant step in combating the opioid epidemic by installing three of seven planned vending machines dispensing the life-saving overdose reversal medication naloxone (brand name Narcan), according to a Pittsburgh Post-Gazette report.
"Although Allegheny County has distributed naloxone to partner organizations and individuals for over six years, many people still may experience challenges such as stigma in acquiring the medication," Otis Pitts, deputy director of the Bureau of Food Safety, Housing & Policy for the Health Department, told the news outlet. "With the vending machines, anyone can access naloxone on their own terms and remain anonymous."
The Narcan is free and available 24/7.
