High school students in Glen Rock, N.J., have proposed launching a student-run vending machine business to generate ongoing funding for school clubs, according to a TAPinto Fair Lawn/Glen Rock report.

During an April 6 presentation to the Board of Education, students Jasmeet Kochar, Erin Nerona and Nikos McAllister requested a $7,665 startup loan to fund the project, which would offer a mix of popular and nutritious snacks and beverages priced between $2.50 and $4.50.

The initiative, led by the Glen Rock Students for Service Club, is designed to provide both financial support for student activities and hands-on learning opportunities in business operations, financial management and leadership. The students projected monthly sales of about $13,000, which they said would cover restocking costs, loan repayment and ongoing contributions to club funding.

With support from the district's foodservice provider, Pomptonian, the vending machine will stock items that comply with school nutrition guidelines, including granola bars, baked chips, juices and other non-caffeinated beverages. Students estimate monthly profits of about $5,000 after expenses, presenting the plan as a sustainable model. The board is expected to move forward with a resolution of support.
