New Yorks Coin-Op Crime Spree Hits Gas Station Air Pumps

NEW YORK CITY -- A pair of thieves are wanted for stealing coin-operated air machines from gas stations in the boroughs of Brooklyn and Queens. According to law enforcement officials, some 20 air-service machines, commonly placed outside of gas stations, have been stolen between December and April.

It is unclear whether the coin-op devices have been targeted because of their resale value or the coins in the cashboxes. The thieves are not subtle. Security camera footage shows them attaching tow hooks to the vending machines, then driving away to yank them from their stands.

The theft of the air pumps follows a sadly familiar trend in New York City over the past year, during which time ATMs have been prime mark for thieves. And a crew that stole hundreds of bulk vending machines from locations was recently busted. | SEE STORY
