KANSAS CITY, MO -- Hostess Brands Inc. said new twists on its snack cake classics like Twinkies and Ding Dongs helped lift sales in the second quarter.

For the quarter, ended June 30, the company reported a profit of $28.2 million, up from $21.9 million year over year. Net revenue increased to $203.2 million from $352.5 million reported for the same period the year before.

The Kansas City-based snack cake maker attributed much of the $10.8 million increase in second-quarter revenue to the introduction of novel products, including Chocolate Cake Twinkies, White Fudge Ding Dongs and Golden Cupcakes.

"We are pleased with our continued ability to gain market share, achieve mid-single digit net sales growth and drive profitability in a challenging retail environment, particularly as we cycled very strong results in the prior-year period," commented Hostess president and chief executive Bill Toler. "Our second quarter results were driven by new product initiatives and growing traction of white space opportunities, led by in-store bakery, foodservice and international channel expansion."
